Lutheran Mission – Australia’s inaugural Synodical Assembly was conducted on 28-30 August 2026 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Hamilton.

The Synodical Assembly was marked by a sense of joy and unity. The Assembly was attended by 58 member representatives, nine international guests and a large number of volunteers, LM-A staff and observers. Daily numbers varied between 160 and 190, with the Closing Divine Service attended by over 300 people from near and far.

Across the three days, the member representatives considered a number of proposals, including those about how the church will function in the coming years, a number of motions from congregations seeking to clarify LM-A’s theological position on particular topics and three proposals on establishing altar and pulpit fellowship. While there were questions, discussion and amendments during the sessions, the overwhelming impression was one of a unified desire to be faithful to God’s Word in everything LM-A does. Member representatives conducted themselves with humility and mutual respect, and in the end all proposals were resolved unanimously. Words of thanksgiving were frequently on the lips of speakers. Given past very challenging experiences, this bodes well for the future of LM-A, as we seek to address areas of contention in a God-pleasing and faithful manner.

Almost 200 people attended the Formal Dinner on Saturday evening at the Hamilton Convention Centre. Guests arrived to antipasto platters and drinks in the atrium while a string quartet played before moving into the dining room for a delicious meal. LCMS President Matthew Harrison delivered the keynote address. He spoke eloquently on the death of Martin Luther, highlighting Luther’s commitment to serving the church and encouraging people in the gospel right to his last days. LM-A Chairman Peter Walter presented a gift to Mr Alex Milner, who has offered significant legal assistance to LM-A and many congregations pro bono over the last two years, and President Matt thanked our international guests for their support and the Committee of Management for their hard work during the Establishment Phase, presenting each person with a gift.
