Our Synod

Lutheran Mission - Australia is a synodical church. This means that we are a gathering of congregations walking together with a common confession of faith, operating under the LM-A Confessional Statement and Constitution.

The Synod is the highest constitutional authority in the governance of LM-A. It is made up of member representatives of the congregations and the members of the College of Pastors, who gather every three years for a Synodical Assembly, and for special meetings as required. It elects individuals and determines administrative bodies to serve congregations.

The spiritual-theological pastoral responsibility in Lutheran Mission – Australia rests with the President of LM-A, who is advised by the College of Pastors. Such pastoral responsibility, including the defence, preservation and protection of public doctrine, is identified and described in the Lutheran Confessions in various places including AC XXVIII.21. Lutheran Theological Seminary – Australia (LTS-A) serves LM-A by providing theological education to people seeking to serve as ordained pastors, deaconesses and lay workers, and any other students seeking confessional Lutheran theological teaching. You can learn more about LTS-A here.

Ongoing governance and oversight of LM-A, at the direction of the Synodical Assembly, is by the National Church Council (NCC). The Synodical Assembly appoints committees to assist in core functions of the Synod for the duration of the synodical period. You can find details of the NCC and our current committees below.
