Mission and Ministry

Lutheran Mission - Australia seeks to support, encourage and strengthen confessional Lutherans in Australia and around the world. We do this through a growing number of mission and ministry activities which share the common aim of spreading the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and building each other up in His Body.

Lutheran Mission - Australia Women of Faith

Women play a vital role in our Church as carers and nurturers who positively influence their families, live out their God-given vocations, and serve the wider community with compassion.  We value and affirm the many roles women hold - as wives, mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, friends, and colleagues - and recognise the unique contributions they make in each sphere of life. We are committed to supporting and encouraging women as they participate and serve across their families, workplaces, and educational settings (1 Thessalonians 5:11).

Women of Faith Groups

Lutheran Mission - Australia seeks to enrich women’s daily walk with God by nurturing Women of Faith Groups for women of all ages, so that women may grow deeper in their relationship with God and with one another as they faithfully live out their God-given vocations and participate in mission both locally and beyond (John 15: 5).

The Faith Groups encourage women to come together in their congregations, nurturing relationships, fostering a deep sense of belonging, and cultivating connectedness as members of the body of Christ (Romans 12:4-5)

Under the spiritual care and oversight of the Pastor, women are encouraged to meet and

  • engage deeply in the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17), ask questions, seek understanding, encourage one another and share testimonies of God’s goodness

  • pray with and for each other (Colossians 1:9)

  • extend Christ’s love across local, national and global contexts (Philippians 2:4) by supporting mission projects and serving the wider church.

Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Burundi Mission Appeal

In March 2025, LM-A launched a mission appeal to support the work of the Lord in Burundi.

Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Burundi (HELCB) is the first Lutheran church in the nation. It started as a registered church institution in March 2017 with 300 members. Since then, it has grown to an estimated 2572 members. Despite the fact that the majority of HELCB members are refugees returned from neighbouring countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania) and others have been directly or indirectly affected by the historical social conflicts which marked Burundi for years, the young church has 10 parishes and an extensive program of Sunday worship services including Holy Communion, evangelism, baptism (children and adults), confirmation classes, marriage celebrations, seminars, training & workshops to educate their lay workers and volunteers, and diakonia and development projects.

In August 2023, HELCB rejoiced at the installation of their first bishop, Emile Nkurunziza, who was installed by the Lutheran Bishops from East African Region in Bujumbura. Bishop Emile is the only full-time employed member of the church.

HELCB is a strongly confessional church which is doing wonderful work in local communities and is continuing to grow. They have a desperate need for prayer and financial support. Their greatest challenges are an insufficient number of trained and ordained pastors and evangelists, as well as the inherent poverty among church members with various needs socio-economic nature. As the Burundi government has restricted churches from operating in rented or borrowed buildings/premises such as schools, reception halls, HELCB’s rapidly growing churches are struggling to purchase land and construct basic shelters to use as churches.

Please keep the members of HELCB in your prayers. We encourage you to lend your financial support by depositing donations into the LM-A bank account, with the reference line “HELCB Mission Appeal”.
