New Testament Biblical Greek Class

Term 3 - Thursday evenings online learning opportunity

Lutheran Theological Seminary - Australia is offering a wonderful low-cost opportunity for lay people and pre-seminary students to explore the New Testament in 2026. Dr Greg Lockwood will be teaching a full year in-depth Bible study of key New Testament books (John, Luke, Romans, 1 Corinthians) to members of LM-A and other interested parties on Tuesday evenings.

To complement this series, a parallel class in extension Greek will be offered to pastors and lay people who have had at least one year of prior Koine Greek study is being held on Thursday evenings. The Bible study will cover one New Testament book each “term” (nominally 10-12 weeks) with breaks corresponding to school holidays in South Australia.

All sessions will run 6 – 7:30pm Adelaide time via Circle, LM-A’s online community platform.

  • Tuesday evenings: Bible study in English (preferably ESV translation).

  • Thursday evenings: extension study in Greek, including extensive reading in the original language plus exegetical commentary/application. While not mandatory, Greek students are encouraged to also attend the English classes as they will provide helpful context (i.e. the Greek material will build on the English material).

FAQs

Q: How much work will be involved? Will there be preparation required before each class? Papers to write? Tests?

A: The sessions will be offered as Bible studies, with no assumed prior knowledge and no tests. However, as one gets out what one puts in, students will be encouraged to read the texts before coming to class and to reflect on them afterwards during the following week.

Q: Is there an age limit?

A: The Bible studies will be suitable for teenagers upwards.

Q: How long will the sessions be?

A: 1.5 hours, with a 5-minute break in the middle.

Q: What format will the sessions take?

A: For the sessions in English (Tuesday nights), there will be extensive reading from the Bible followed by expository teaching by the lecturer, with an opportunity for questions at the end of each paragraph. The readings will be from the ESV, although students are encouraged to have their favourite translation handy for the sake of comparison.

For the Thursday night sessions, the same passages will be covered in Greek, with a focus on extensive reading in the original language. There will not be any grammar sessions as such.
